Phil Swan is responsible for developing and interpreting the global economic outlook and its risks, including the implications for the rapidly evolving information technology industry. He assesses the capital investment environment with a focus on IT hardware, software and services spending and designs and conducts special studies to assess the impact of economic issues and events of importance to the IBM Corporation. He is currently a member of the industry economics panel of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Phil has been at IBM since 1974. Prior to that, he taught at Boston University. He is currently a member of the industry economics panel of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors. Phil chairs the business and industry economic policy committee of the international Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He was recently a member of the U.S. Census Advisory Group representing the American Economic Association. Phil has a Bachelors Degree from Bowdoin College and a Masters Degree and PhD from the University of Illinois.

Tallwood Venture Capital in Silicon Valley invests in unique and hard-to-do semiconductor technology solutions for computing, communication, and consumer platforms. Mr. Banatao pioneered the PC chip set and graphics acceleration architecture that continue to be two of the foundation technologies in every PC today. As an engineer, he is credited with developing several key semiconductor technologies and is regarded as a Silicon visionary. A recipient of various honors and awards from U.S. and international groups, he has been on the Forbes Midas List for at least four years running.

Dado holds a B.S.E.E., cum laude, from the Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He and his wife, Maria, are philanthropists both in the U.S. and in their home country, the Philippines, focusing their time, attention and contribution to educational causes. They have three very accomplished children, 2 sons and a daughter.

About the Annual Lecture

The annual Dr. N.H. Paul Chung Lecture features a distinguished individual discussing an important international topic of interest. This event is held in honor of Dr. Paul Chung who founded the Pacific Asian Management Institute (PAMI) in 1977 with the energetic vision of creating a “knowledge center” for international management.

For over 32 years, PAMI has brought people together from around the world to study and exchange ideas on international business and related issues, driving internationalization and global recognition for the UH Shidler College of Business, PAMI aspires to become the premier source of international business and management expertise with an Asia-Pacific Region focus.
