PhD in International Management — Program Structure

The PhD degree program is small and individualized which enables students to pursue their own areas of interest. Admission is highly competitive, and only full-time study is allowed.

The doctoral program reflects the school's philosophy that a broad and cross-functional orientation is necessary to appreciate complex business problems that extend beyond the narrow confines of a particular discipline. Students planning academic careers can take advantage of teaching opportunities, along with instruction in teaching techniques that are especially effective in management education.

Doctoral candidates choose one specialization from among five areas: International Accounting, Asian Finance, Global Information Technology Management, International Marketing, and International Organization and Strategy.

Program Courses

Each specialization offers up to four theory courses. During the first two years in the program, students are required to take all theory courses offered in their chosen specialization. Students are expected to take two or more theory courses in other specializations within Shidler College as well. Additionally, students are expected to take four research methods courses in the areas of economics and statistics, often selected from other UH graduate programs. Furthermore, all students must enroll in BUS 705 PhD Seminar in International Management for the first two years of their program. Enrollment in the BUS 705 after the first two years is recommended but not required.
