If I am denied admission into The Shidler College of Business, what are my options?

You may reapply to The Shidler College of Business at a later date after you have met all the admission requirements, or you may apply to a different degree program. In either case, you should consult with an advisor to discuss your specific situation.

If I am a transfer student (e.g. from Windward Community College, Chaminade University, University of Oregon, etc.), how do I apply to The Shidler College of Business?

All transfer students must fill out the University of Hawaii Common Application to enter UHM and to apply to The Shidler College of Business. You will also need to submit official transcripts from all Non-UH system institutions attended to the UHM Admissions and Records Office in QLCSS Room 010. Please contact the Admissions and Records Office for more details on the university application process at 956-8975.

Can I take business courses before I am admitted into The Shidler College of Business?

Yes, non-Shidler College of Business students may register for 300-level business courses on the fifth day of instruction. The class must be open, you must have junior standing, and you must have met all the course prerequisites. Please note that if you enroll in three or more business courses (or equivalents) beyond the pre-business core, (e.g. BLAW, MGT, MKT, etc.), a combined GPA of at least a 2.5 in these courses is required for admission. Students should report to BusAd B101 to complete the request form to take 300-400 level business courses prior to the fifth day of instruction.

Is it possible to take classes in the evening?

Most courses are normally held during the day. However, Outreach College (956-8400) has fall, winter, spring, and summer accelerated evening sessions which offer primarily General Education Courses and upper-division Arts & Sciences courses.

Can I take my business courses for credit/no credit (CR/NC)?

All BBA degree-seeking candidates must take all the general education courses, business courses, and courses in the major for a letter grade unless it is offered mandatory CR/NC (i.e. Mkt 351). The only area where a student can complete courses for CR/NC is the upper division/ non-introductory electives. If a student uses the second year language courses as non-introductory electives, these must be completed for a letter grade.

Does the College provide internship opportunities?

Yes, The Shidler College of Business has an internship program which can provide academic credits. Internships are structured so that students can apply their classroom knowledge to a practical work setting. Students may also check with the Career Services and Co-Operative Education Offices at UHM for internship opportunities. Note: Students may not use internship credit as credit toward their major. However, up to three credits may be used as general upper-division elective credit.

Does The Shidler College of Business award any scholarships?

There are many scholarships/awards available to classified Shidler College of Business students. Applications and information are available in BusAd B101 in the spring for the following academic year.

Can I take business courses at any accredited Hawaii university/college (e.g. Hawaii Pacific University, Kapiolani Community College, etc.) and transfer them to The Shidler College of Business?

Most 100 and 200-level courses will transfer from the various accredited Hawaii institutions. No more than two upper division (300-400-level) business courses will transfer to your BBA degree program.

Can I declare a double major at The Shidler College of Business?

Yes. To qualify for a double major, students must have a minimum at UH Manoa GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the two proposed majors. At the time of application, the student must have completed at least one different course in each major. Only one course may double count between majors.

How does advising work once admitted to The Shidler College of Business?

Academic advisors at The Shidler College of Business Office of Student Academic Services assist students with program planning and course selection, learning university policies and procedures, fulfilling graduation requirements in a timely manner, explaining transfer credits and study abroad information and other educational opportunities, resources and options. Students should consult their advisors on a regular basis to monitor their academic status and progress toward degree completion.

All applicants are required to attend an admissions session upon application. Furthermore, in their first semester, all Shidler College of Business students are required to attend a Mandatory Advising session which will cover all graduation requirements and Shidler College of Business resources.
