Former Faculty at SOA

Former SOA faculty have impacted accounting education around the world. Former SOA faculty are also found on the webpages for SOA Emeritus Faculty and those who taught at SOA while working on their Ph.D. are found on the web-page for SOA Requirements for Ph.D. Students. All of the Full-Time faculty have a Ph.D., unless other educational credentials are provided. Most full-time and part-time faculty also have professional certifications, which are generally not listed here.

FORMER SOA FULL-TIME FACULTY 

  • Dr. Sharon Cox taught at SOA in the 2000s. In 2014, she became a faculty member at the University of Illinois.
  • Dr. Devan Mescall taught at SOA in the 2000s. He left to join the University of Saskatchewan in Canada (He was also a visiting faculty at SOA from 2016-2017).
  • Dr. Jialin (Kevin) Sun taught at SOA in the 2000s. He left to join a hedge fund near New York City and then joined St. John's University.
  • Dr. David (Tawei) Wang taught at SOA in the 2010s. He joined DePaul University in 2015.
  • Dr. John Wendell taught at SOA for over 25 years and retired in 2016.
     

Former SOA full-time Faculty (from the 1990s)

  • Dr. June Aono taught at SOA in the 1980s and 1990s.  She joined Chaminade University and then UH-West Oahu
  • Dr. Cindy Eakin taught at SOA in the 1990s. She left UH to join University of the Pacific in California.
  • Dr. Jeff Gramlich taught at SOA from 1989 to 2001.  He left to join the University of Michigan and then the University of Southern Maine and later Washington State University as Director of the Hoops Tax Institute and Howard D. and B. Phyllis Hoops Endowed Chair.
  • Dr. Terry Gregson taught at SOA in the 1980s and 1990s. He left to pursue other endeavors.
  • Dr. Paul Kazinski taught at SOA in the 1990s. He left to pursue accouting education in Vietnam.
  • Dr. Rebecca (Becky) Maupin taught at SOA in the 1980s and 1990s. She left to pursue other endeavors.
  • Dr. Farhad Simyar was the Acting Director at SOA for a year in the 1990s.  He returned to Concordia University in Canada 
  • Dr. Partha Sengupta taught at SOA in the 1990s. He left to join the University of Maryland.
     

Former SOA full-time Faculty (from the 1970s and 1980s)

  • Dr. Wilton Anderson was SOA’s Acting Director for a year in the 1980s. He came from Univ. of Oklahoma.
  • Dr. Ralph Black taught at UH during the 1980s. He moved to the Big-Island.
  • Dr. Fred Choi taught at UH in the 1980s.  He left to join New York University (Stern School of Business) and became Dean, Emeritus and Distinguished Service Professor of Business. UH recognized him in 2012 with its Distinguished Alumni Award. 
  • Dr. Ed Currie taught at UH during the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Dr. Shirley Dennis-Escoffier taught at UH during the 1980s.  She joined Univ. of Miami in Florida.
  • Dr. Lyle Jacobsen taught at UH during the 1970s.
  • Dr. JooHo Kim taught at UH during the 1980s. He moved back to Korea.
  • Dr. Walter Kunitake taught at UH during the 1980s. He moved to a UH job on the Big Island.
  • Dr. Wayne Label taught at SOA during the 1980s. He left to go to another university.
  • Dr. Sammy Lee taught at SOA during the 1980s. He moved to Korea.
  • Dr. Steve Moscove taught at UH during the 1980s. He moved to a university on the mainland.
  • Dr. Gary Munroe taught at UH during the 1980s. He moved to a university in Australia and eventually became President of the accounting association there.
  • Dr. Robert (Bob) Nagoda taught at SOA during the 1980s.  He moved to New York.
  • Dr. John Strefeler taught at SOA in the 1980s. He moved to Mount Union College in Ohio.
  • Dr. Donald (Don) Taylor was SOA’s Acting Director for a year during the 1980s, after retiring from the University of Arkansas.
  • Dr. Warren Wee taught at SOA during the 1980s. He joined Hawaii Pacific University.

Former SOA Summer or Visiting Faculty (from the 21st Century)

  • Dr. Devan Mescall taught at SOA for a year in 2016-2017. He was a Professor from the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and previously taught at UH.
  • Dr. Dong Hoon Yang taught at SOA for a year in 2013.  He was the Dean at Dongguk University in Korea.
  • Dr. Shu Hsing Li taught at SOA for a year during the 2000s. He became the Dean at National Taiwan University.
  • Dr. Tom Carment taught at SOA for several summers in the 2000s. He is a Professor at Rogers State University in Oklahoma.
  • Dr. Brian Mayhew taught at SOA for a semester in the 2000s.  He was a Professor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
     

Former SOA Summer or Visiting Faculty (from the 20th Century)

  • Dr. Ed Coffman taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  He visited from Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Dr. Chan Jane Lin taught at SOA during a summer in the 1990s. She is a Professor at National Taiwan University.
  • Dr. Fred Davis taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s. He left UT-Dallas and joined Hawaii Pacific University.
  • Dr. Roger Hopkins taught at SOA for a year during the 1980s.  He visited from Victoria University in New Zealand.
  • Dr. Dale Martin taught at SOA for a summer during the 1980s.  He visited from Wake Forest University.
  • Dr. Kevin Murphy taught at SOA for a year during the 1980s. He visited from Oklahoma State University.
  • Dr. Farhad Simyar was the Acting Director at SOA for a year in the 1990s.  He was a Professor from Concordia University in Canada 
  • Dr. John H. Smith taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  He visited from Northern Illinois University.
  • Dr. Pamela (Pam) Smith taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  She visited from Northern Illinois University.
  • Dr. Miklos Vaserhelyi taught at SOA during a summer in the 1990s. He became the KPMG Distinguished Professor of Accounting Information Systems at Rutgers in New Jersey and was recognized for his teaching by the American Accounting Association.
  • Dr. James (Jim) Wheeler taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  He was Professor-Emeritus from University of Michigan.
  • Dr. Jack Wilkerson taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  He left to become the Dean at Wake Forest University.
  • Dr. Rebecca Chung-Fern Wu taught at SOA for a summer during the 1990s.  She visited from National Taiwan University.
     

SOA LECTURERS OR INSTRUCTORS IN ACCOUNTING (if non-TAX)

  • Robert (Bobby) Carnes, MS, taught at SOA during the 2000s.  He was an internal auditor and left to pursue a Ph.D. at Penn State.
  • Seung C. Choo, MBA, taught at SOA during the 2000s. He was a CPA who moved to Korea.
  • Robert (Bob) Hatanaka, MAcc, taught at SOA during the 2000s. He is a Partner, CW Associates.
  • Khin P. Hliang, MAcc, taught at SOA during the 2000s. She left to earn a Ph.D. from University of Waterloo in Canada.
  • Amin Leiman, MBA, MS, taught at SOA during the 2000s. He was a Director, Risk and Advisory Services at KPMG and moved to California.
  • Myron Mitsuyasu, MBA, taught at SOA during the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. He served as Director of Internal Audit and in other positions for Kamehameha Schools.
  • Henry Montgomery taught at SOA during the 2000s.  He is Chairman/CEO of an accounting outsourcing company and served on the audit committee of a few Fortune 500 companies.
  • Gary NishikawaMBA, taught at SOA during the 2000s and 2010s. He is former Managing Partner, Deloitte & Touche, LLP. He was recognized by Shidler College and HSCPA.
  • Dustin Verity, taught at SOA during the 2010s.  He is a Principal, Verity Accountancy Corp.
     

SOA Lecturers or Instructors in Accounting (from the 20th Century)

  • Jeannie Collison, MBA, taught at SOA in the 1980s and 1990s. She moved to Missouri.
  • Scott Leong, MBA, taught at SOA during the 1990s. He left to earn his Ph.D. from University of Utah and became a professor in Washington.
  • Adam Liss, MA, taught at SOA during the 1990s. He left to pursue other educational related ventures.
  • Russell Mokulehua, MBA, taught at SOA in the 1990s. He was a systems analyst and President of XDLC Corp.
  • Hal Oishi taught at SOA during the 1990s after he retired as a partner from Coopers & Lybrand.
  • Blane Ruschak, MAcc, taught at SOA during the 1990s.  He was an audit manager with KPMG and became KPMG's Executive Director of Campus Recruiting.
  • John Edward (Ed) Schell, MBA, taught at SOA during the 1990s. He was a private consultant.
  • Mary Pat Waterhouse, MBA, taught at SOA during the 1990s. She left KPMG's consulting unit and subsequently joined the state government.

  • Richard (Dick) Coons, MBA, taught at SOA in the 1990s after he retired as Managing Partner, Deloitte.
  • Kurt Kawafuchi, JD, LL.M., taught at SOA during the 2000s and 2010s. He was Director of Taxation for the State of Hawaii and became a Partner at Hochman Salkin Rettig Toscher.
  • Ray Kamikawa, JD, taught at SOA during the 1990s. He was Director of State Taxation and then returned to private practice as a lawyer.
  • Peter Lenhart, JD, MAcc, taught Law for Accountants at SOA during the 1990s and 2000s. He was a practicing lawyer.
  • Cheryl Matsumoto, MAcc, taught at SOA during the 1990s and 2000s. She served with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Honolulu.
  • Mikhail Ponce, JD, taught Law for Accountants during the 2010s. He was a practicing lawyer.
  • Michael McEnerney, JD, taught at SOA during the 1970s.  He became a member of the UH Board of Regents in 2015.Steve McLeighton, MT, taught at SOA during the 1990s. He left to become a partner with KPMG in Atlanta.
  • Alan Schlissel, JD, LLM, MBA, taught at SOA during the 2010s. He was the Managing Partner, Schlissel & Associates.
  • Amy Takahashi, JD, LLM, taught at SOA during the 2000s and 2010s. She was a lawyer/CPA at LegacyTaxGroup.com.
  • Kent Tsukamoto, MBT, taught at SOA during the 1990s.  He was a partner with PWC and founded Accuity. He was recognized by the UH Alumni Association and Shidler College.
  • Stephen Yim, JD, taught at SOA during the summers in the 1990s.  He was a former IRS estate tax examiner.
  • Eric Wen, PhD, taught at SOA during the 2010s. He was an Analyst at Kamakura Corporation and joined University of Hawaii-West Oahu.
