Shidler alumnus and supporter Leonard (Lenny) Frank Kamp, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on February 5, 2017 at the age of 76.

Originally from Rochester, New York, Lenny came to Hawai‘i in 1963 for Peace Corps training on the Big Island. He spent two years constructing roads and airports in North Borneo as part of his Peace Corps duties before returning back to Hawai’i. While attending the University of Hawai‘i, he began working for Hawaiian Dredging & Construction and was quickly promoted to vice president overseeing projects in the South East Asia region. In 1985, he purchased Haas Insulations Inc. and later sold the company in 1995.

In retirement, Lenny enjoyed traveling with his wife Becky (she passed away in 2013) and attending UH sports and alumni events.

The Kamps were strong supporters of the University of Hawai‘i and the Shidler College of Business. The couple established three scholarships to support business students - The Leonard and Rebecca Kamp Endowed Scholarship, The Leonard and Rebecca Kamp Executive MBA Scholarship and The Leonard and Rebecca Kwai Hin Kamp Scholarship. They also supported the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) at the Shidler College of Business, UH Mānoa Athletics and the UH Mānoa College of Engineering.

In 2010, Lenny said, “The University of Hawai‘i has been good to me and my wife Becky. We are extremely fortunate to be in a position to give back to the University to ensure that talented and deserving students continue to receive a world-class education. We hope one day the scholarship recipients will pass on their knowledge and support to advance the public good.”

Lenny received a BS in civil engineering and an MBA from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. He was a member of the first Executive MBA class in 1979.

Kamp is survived by his mother Florence, brothers Denny and wife Sandra, Terry and wife Kathleen, sister-in-law Deborah Hung Lee and her husband Allen, brother-in-law Philip Hung and seven nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are asked to continue to support Palama Settlement, Aloha United Way, Catholic Charities Hawaii, UH-Mānoa Shidler College of Business and the Hawaii Community Foundation.

Visitation with the family will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday April 22 at the Newman Center - Holy Spirit Parish, 1941 East-West Road on the campus of the University of Hawai’i-Mānoa followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. Kamp's friends are all warmly invited to attend.
