ITM student won the IEEE ASRU international hackathon

A University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa team won the Best Novelty and Impact Award at an international hackathon for a project designed to transform how community health workers (CHWs) support patients during and after remote check-ins. The winning project, “Aurion CHW Compassion Kit,” acts as a “digital co-pilot,” utilizing speech analysis and artificial intelligence to flag possible signs of hidden distress. The system analyzes both what a patient says and how it is said—through the tone and pacing of a patient’s speech—to detect possible signs of emotional or mental distress and sends a discreet alert to the CHW along with a context-aware suggestion to guide a more supportive response.

ITM student won the UH Venture Competition 2025

At the finals held on May 9th at the Waiʻalae Country Club, BlueMed claimed first place and a $25,000 prize, sponsored by American Savings Bank, for its AI-powered app that helps aquaculture farmers quickly diagnose diseases in shrimp and fish by analyzing uploaded images and symptoms. Farmers can also order medicine, feed and supplements directly through the platform, streamlining access to critical supplies. The team, led by Quang Loc Lam (business administration) and Thi Hai Au La (microbiology), aims to boost aquaculture health through accessible, tech-driven solutions.

AI-centered workshop brings together multiple disciplines

Leveraging momentum generated by The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 2024, Shidler College of Business’ (Shidler College) Information Technology Management (ITM) department took a bold step forward in enriching academic dialogue centered on artificial intelligence (AI), responsibility and social justice. Earlier this month, the department hosted its inaugural post-HICSS research workshop on campus, showcasing ITM’s dedication to exploring how cutting-edge technologies can be harnessed for the greater good, while ensuring the march of progress aligns with societal values of equity and responsibility.
