Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - Advising

ADVISING

All scheduled advising appointments are made through STAR Balance. Sign-up and read more on our advising website.

Yes! Limited drop-in appointments are available. A reservation is not necessary but is first-come, first-served. More information can be found on the advising website.

Students should see “Travel Industry Management” under the “Academic Advising” menu after signing-in to STAR Balance.

Students should make sure at least one advisor is selected to view their schedule and sign-up for an appointment.

Students should read the STAR Balance Instruction tutorial for more information on how to use STAR Balance. Students who are experiencing technical issues with using STAR should email starhelp@hawaii.edu.

Students should scroll throughout STAR Balance to search for open appointments with a TIM advisor. If there aren’t any available appointments, that could mean the advisor schedules are full. Students should check back on STAR Balance at a later time for additional availability.

Students may also drop-in for advising, email a TIM advisor directly, or email timinfo@hawaii.edu.

There may be a few reasons:

  1. The minimum amount of time for an advising appointment is 30-minutes. Thus, students who try to sign-up for an appointment that is only 15-minutes long will be unable to do so;
  2. Students who “no-show” to enough advising appointments may be placed on a “no-fly list” requiring them to email timinfo@hawaii.edu to schedule an appointment;
  3. Students could also be experiencing technical issues. If so, students should email starhelp@hawaii.edu.

TIM OSAS (advising) will place the following holds on student accounts:

These holds are placed to notify students on their Mandatory Advising and Academic Action requirements.

Students should review the mandatory advising and academic action websites for more information including how to remove their advising holds.

Please note that advising holds will prevent registration so they should be remedied as soon as possible.

Advisors will input notes into the “Advisor Notes” section of STAR Academic Essentials. However, students are encouraged to take their own notes during their appointments to keep track of what is discussed.

Mandatory advising is required for specific student populations: freshmen, sophomores, and students in their first semester in TIM (major change/ declaration and transfer students). More information can be found on our mandatory advising website.

ADMISSIONS

Future TIM major students should speak with an academic advisor to learn more.

Please refer to the undergraduate programs page “Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Admissions Requirements” for more details.

Please refer to the undergraduate programs page “Change/Declaration of Major Admissions Requirements” for more details.

Please see below for suggested non-linear steps to determine which courses you should take to transfer to UH Mānoa and earn a BS-TIM degree. Students are also encouraged to meet with an advisor to discuss transferring in more detail.

  • Review required class for a BS-TIM degree (see undergraduate program page)
  • Visit the course transfer database and search for transfer course equivalencies
    • Select or type your current/prior non-UHM institution (“transfer from”)
    • Select University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (“transfer to”)
    • Search for classes by subject (“subject code”)
  • Cross reference identified transfer courses to see if the class fulfills a required course for the BS-TIM degree (see undergraduate program page)
    • Example:
      • COM 100 at ASU is equivalent to COMG 151 at UHM
      • COMG 151 is a required BS-TIM class
  • Courses that are (1) identified as having a transfer equivalent, AND (2) fulfill a required BS-TIM class are highly recommended
  • Notes:
    • If a class does not have an identified equivalent or shows up as an “elective,” students may petition the class for transfer. Students should reach out to the Mānoa Admissions Office regarding transfer class petitions (manoa.admissions@hawaii.edu).
    • Transfer students will have their focus requirements prorated based upon the amount of credits a student transfers.
    • Students considering transferring their accounting (ACC) sequence should be mindful that both ACC courses need to be completed either (1) both at UH Mānoa (ACC 200 & ACC 210); or (2) both completely outside of UH Mānoa. Thus, transfer students should aim to finish BOTH ACC classes prior to transfer.
      • ACC 201: Financial Accounting and ACC 202: Managerial Accounting transfer equivalents are accepted

Students interested in transferring from a University of Hawaiʻi Community College (UHCC) are encouraged to meet with an advisor in the Mānoa Transfer Coordination Center .

ACADEMIC PLANNING & DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Students should refer to the undergraduate programs page for required classes and requirements.

Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with all requirements: general education, major, and graduation. In addition, students should be aware of course sequencing and prerequisites, course load, and suggested 4-year plans and guidelines.

Please note that requirements may vary based upon when students officially begin their studies in TIM. Students should refer to the TIM program sheets on the forms & downloads page to review their exact requirements by enrollment year.

Students are recommended to take 15-credits, or approximately 5 classes, each fall and spring semester. A minimum of 12-credits are required to be considered a full-time student in fall and spring semesters. Students are limited to 19-credits maximum each semester.

Students are required to earn 120-credits total, 45 at the upper-division (300+) level, in order to graduate with a BS-TIM degree.

A majority of classes are offered at 3-credits, but credits may vary (e.g., ICS 101 is 4-credits).

Please review the undergraduate program page for more details specific to the TIM major.

International students have additional requirements they must meet for enrollment. Please review the ISS website for details.

Class standing is based on a student’s earned credits. Earned credits include transfer credits. Earned credits do not include currently registered (but not earned) credits.

Freshman (1st year) = 0-29.99 earned credits
Sophomore (2nd year) = 30-59.99 earned credits
Junior (3rd year) = 60-89.99 earned credits
Senior (4th year) = 90+ earned credits

Lower division classes are taught at the 100- or 200- level. Upper division classes are taught at the 300- or 400- level.

A prerequisite is a class that a student must take before another class.

Prerequisites are important because they impact course sequencing and a student’s ability to take courses and subsequently graduate. For example, TIM 101: Introduction to TIM is a prerequisite to almost all upper-division TIM classes. Thus, delaying TIM 101 will delay enrollment in any UD TIM class.

Students should review the “prerequisite pathways” within the “TIM Major Requirements” drop-down menu on the undergraduate program page to familiarize themselves with prerequisites specific to TIM major classes. The course catalog and STAR also identify prerequisites.

Students are encouraged to review their STAR Academic Essential and GPS Registration to review their progress. Students may also use the TIM program sheets to track their own progress.

Placement exams for TIM students are optional. TIM students may want to take a placement exam in:

  • Mathematics
  • Second Language

TIM students may consider the math placement exam to see if they test into the MATH calculus courses for the TIM major (MATH 203, MATH 215, MATH 241, or MATH 251A).

TIM students may consider a second language placement exam if they are proficient in a second language and want to see if they can test into a higher level.

More information and links to sign up for a placement exam can be found on the registrar’s website: Placement Exam

Students are encouraged to review the TIM international exchange website for more information. Students may also meet with a TIM academic advisor to discuss more.

Yes. Students are allowed to take a leave of absence (LOA) for up to two (2) fall or spring semesters. More information and details can be found on the registrar’s website, including a copy of the LOA form.

Withdrawal and leave

Students who would like to take a LOA should speak with an advisor.

REGISTRATION

Students should check class availability for class listings by semester.

Students should refer to the undergraduate programs page for required classes and requirements.

Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with all requirements: general education, major, and graduation. In addition, students should be aware of course sequencing and prerequisites, course load, and suggested 4-year plans and guidelines. The suggested 4-year plans and guidelines are a good tool to figure out which classes may be appropriate to register for.

STAR GPS Registration will also recommend classes students can take.

Students are also encouraged to meet with an academic advisor to discuss their academic plans and schedules. Academic planning and upcoming semester schedules are also discussed during mandatory advising.

Students should refer to the academic calendar on the office of the registrar’s website for specific dates and deadlines to add and drop classes.

Students should refer to the registration errors & overrides page to identify what the error means and the type of override that can resolve the issue.

For students who receive an error message when registering for a TIM class, they should complete the override request form to request an override to resolve the issue.

Special note:

  • ACC 200: students must be sophomore standing (30-59.99 earned credits) or higher to register for ACC 200. Students should wait until grades are posted and credits earned to add ACC 200 to their schedules.
  • TIM 305 & TIM 403: Students who transfer in ACC 201 and ACC 202 will receive registration error messages for TIM 305 and TIM 403. Please submit an override request form to remedy this issue.

Students can view for holds on their account on myUH portal and also on STAR (see screenshot below).

Holds will indicate the (1) type of hold, (2) the date the hold goes into effect, (3) a brief description, and (4) the office that placed the hold with their contact information. Students should contact the office that placed the hold directly for removal.

TIM OSAS (advising) will place the following holds on student accounts:

*Important note for international students:
International students should also be mindful of student health insurance holds, health clearance holds, and visa clearance holds that are also placed on their accounts.

Students are also encouraged to reach out and speak with an advisor to discuss options.

The undergraduate program page has a BS TIM 4-year Guideline, 4 year-plans, and program sheets. Students should consider alternative classes that align with their timeline (e.g., replacing a 1st year class with another recommended 1st year class), course load (e.g., replacing a natural science course with another natural science or STEM based course) and course sequencing (e.g., taking an alternate course that is an important prerequisite).

Yes, non-TIM major students are able to register for TIM classes. Non-TIM majors should fill out the override request form to request an override for registration.

Please note that for enrollment and overrides to be approved, students must meet the required prerequisites for their respective class request(s).

Yes, students are able to take courses at University of Hawaii community colleges (UHCCs) while enrolled at UH Manoa. They just need to change the “campus” when registering in STAR. TIM students may consider taking general education and TIM lower division courses at a UHCC.

Classes taken and grades earned at a UHCC do not count towards a student’s UH Manoa GPA. Note, there is a slight delay in UHCC transfer courses from appearing on student transcripts and STAR reports. Please give at least a few business days after the end of the semester and from grades being officially posted to see them reflected on accounts.

Please note: taking courses as a UHCC could have impacts on financial aid. Students should speak with a financial aid counselor if they have any questions.

GRADES & GPA

Students are required to earn a minimum “D” in all general education courses and “C-” in all upper-division TIM major courses. Note: Some classes may have higher minimum grade requirements (e.g., language, ACC 200, computer proficiency ("C" or higher)).

Students are required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA, 2.0 TIM major core GPA, and 2.0 TIM emphasis GPA.

Please refer to the undergraduate program page and “graduation requirements” for more information.

Students who do not earn the required grades should plan to retake the class. More information on repeating failed courses, or courses with grades of C-, D+, D or D- can be found in our course catalog.

Students who do not maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA, 2.0 TIM major core GPA, and 2.0 TIM emphasis GPA are placed on academic action. More detailed information on academic action policies can be found in the catalog.

Students who are flagged for academic action are notified in late December to early January (fall academic action) or early-to-mid June (spring academic action).

Students are required to take all classes (except for internship) for a letter grade (A-F) to count towards their degree requirements (general education and TIM major). The “CR/NC” grading option is only for TIM internship classes and for classes that will only count towards credit requirements for graduation (NOT general education or TIM major).

FINANCIAL AID, SCHOLARSHIPS & PAYING FOR CLASSES

Students should look at our scholarship page for opportunities and to apply. We have scholarship opportunities available for incoming/new TIM students and current TIM students. There are also industry scholarships available and student awards.

Yes, students may search for on campus employment and/or work study positions on SECE.

Students should refer to the financial aid website or speak to a financial aid counselor to learn more about applying for financial aid.

Students should refer to myUH info to learn about payment options and paying for classes.

Students receiving financial aid should refer to the financial aid website and disbursement of aid.

Students who will be utilizing VA benefits to pay for classes should refer and work with the office of the registrar for veteran’s benefits.

Students should refer to the academic calendar on the office of the registrar’s website for specific deadlines to pay for classes.

Financial aid (grants, federally backed loans) will only pay for classes that are required for a student to earn a degree in their declared major. In other words, for TIM majors, financial aid will pay for any classes required to earn a BS-TIM degree. Required classes typically include: general education requirements, major requirements, minors, and classes taken to reach the 120 total and 45 upper-division credit requirements.

If a student registers for a class that is not required, financial aid will not pay for the course and the class will show up as “NOT IN PLAN” on their STAR GPS Registration.

Please note, once a student is registered for 12 credits of required classes, they may add non-required classes to their schedule above 12 credits which will not impact their financial aid.

Students should refer to the financial aid CPoS page for more information.

Scholarships typically do not fall within this financial aid category and will have their own criteria which must be met.

PREPARING FOR CLASSES

Students are able to review and purchase textbooks through the UH Mānoa Bookstore.

Students can get their Mānoa One Card at the campus center ID and Information Office (Campus Center 212). More detailed information can be found on the Mānoa One Card website.

Limited parking is available to students on-campus. Students can read more about parking, including purchasing parking permits, on the commuter services website. Students are also encouraged to park off-campus or consider alternative transportation options to get to school.

The University uses Laulima as its class management system for students. Students can learn more about Laulima on the ITS website.
