Scholarships & Financial Aid

The School of Travel Industry Management at the Shidler College of Business recognizes that pursuing higher education is a big investment. In order to support students financially, the TIM School offers numerous ways to fund your education. Outside of the TIM School, multiple industry organizations also offer scholarships to students majoring in TIM.

Incoming TIM students

  • Amount: Up-to $4,000
  • Eligibility: Incoming freshman with a declared BS-TIM major (fall admissions only)
  • Application Requirements: No application required. Scholarships are automatic and based upon merit. If you would like to submit a personal statement for consideration regarding your interest and how this scholarship will help support your studies, please email: timinfo@hawaii.edu
  • Deadline: Declared BS-TIM major by May 1 (priority will be given to students declared by April 1)
  • Amount: Up-to $4,000
  • Eligibility: Incoming transfer student with a declared BS-TIM major (fall admissions only). Second degree seeking students are ineligible.
  • Application Requirements: No application required. Scholarships are automatic and based upon merit. If you would like to submit a personal statement for consideration regarding your interest and how this scholarship will help support your studies, please email: timinfo@hawaii.edu
  • Deadline: Declared BS-TIM major by May 1 (priority will be given to students declared by April 1)
  • Amount: Up-to $4,000
  • Eligibility: Current Manoa students who change/declare their major in TIM (fall major change/declarations only)

  • Deadline: Priority to students who submit their TIM change/declaration of major applications by May 1

Current TIM students

Through funding generously provided by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Hilton Scholarship is a two-year scholarship (up to $12,000 per year) awarded to up-to seven Hawaii residents and Hawaii high school graduates for their junior and senior years who pursue a BS degree in Travel Industry Management.

  • Application Requirements: Application and personal statements discussing extra-curricular activities, personal and professional goals
  • Deadline: mid-February
  • Application: Apply Here
  • Amount: Up-to $3,500
  • Eligibility: BS-TIM major student, Hawaii resident, Hawaii high school graduate
  • Application Requirements: No application required. Scholarships are automatic and based upon merit.
  • Deadline: Students must be currently enrolled and a declared BS-TIM major student by May 15. Students are informed directly of their Hastings scholarship award during the summer for the upcoming school year.

The TIM school is able to offer the Johnson Scholarship, courtesy of alumni William R. Johnson Jr., who has established the Study Abroad Endowment to assist students in funding their travel expenses. TIM major students who will be studying overseas through MIX/NSE during the fall or spring semester are eligible to receive up to $5,000. Students must meet program requirements, including a minimum 3.0 GPA

The UH Mānoa Outreach College offers scholarships for TIM major students planning to take summer classes.

Summer Success Scholarship
  • Amount: Up-to $1,200
  • Eligibility: BS-TIM major student taking a summer class. Second degree seeking students are ineligible. Preference given to juniors and seniors.
  • Application Requirements: Application and personal statements discussing financial need and academic plans.
  • Deadline: end of March
  • Application: sent directly to students in spring semester
Freshmen & Sophomore Merit Scholarships
  • Amount: Up-to $1,200
  • Eligibility: UH Mānoa freshman or sophomore student taking a summer class & varies - see outreach college summer sessions financial for more details
  • Application Requirements: Application and personal statements discussing financial need and academic plans.
  • Deadline: early to mid April

Industry Scholarships

The Hawai‘i Tourism Ho'oilina Scholarship is a partnership between the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association (HLTA), and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Shidler College of Business, School of Travel Industry Management, with funding generously provided through support from the Hawaii State Legislature. The Ho'oilina scholarship is a four-year scholarship (up to $12k per year) awarded to five (5) Hawaii public high school graduates who enroll at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and declare a major in Travel Industry Management (TIM). The annual funding pays for tuition.

As an affiliated school with the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), the AHLA Foundation generously provides scholarship funds specifically for TIM major students. These school-nominated scholarships are merit based, with nominations given to high achieving TIM major students and priority to AHLA student club members.

  • Amount: Varies (up-to $6,000)
  • Eligibility: Current full-time (12 credits) BS-TIM major student & 3.0 cumulative GPA *priority is given to AHLA members
  • Application Requirements: Application and official nomination from TIM School (determined by AHLA faculty advisor & TIM OSAS)
  • Deadline: mid-February
  • Application: Apply Here via AHLA Foundation (nomination done separately, nominees are notified directly)

The AHLA Foundation also awards scholarships outside of TIM School-nominations. Nominations from the TIM School are not required for these scholarships. All TIM major students are encouraged to apply.

The Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association (HLTA) generously provides scholarships to students pursuing studies in travel industry management. Deadlines, application and eligibility requirements may vary. Students are encouraged to review the HLTA website for more information and to apply!
