Nearly 100 alumni and friends gathered at Ken and Saedene Ota’s two-acre residence in Waikapu, Maui, to attend the Shidler Maui Alumni & Friends Event benefiting the Maui Alumni Business Scholarship fund. One hundred percent of funds raised will benefit students from Maui who are pursuing a business degree at the Shidler College of Business.
Guests enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, delectable foods, and drinks donated by Ken, Saedene, and a few other friends. Ken, who is a Shidler alumnus from 1991, is the president and CEO of Pacific Pipe Co. and a member of the Family Business Center of Hawai‘i’s Maui Chapter.
The highlight of the evening’s program was a speech from Mark Hipolito, the first recipient of the Maui Alumni Business Scholarship. Hipolito spoke about the many opportunities he received as a Shidler student and how his scholarship enabled him to achieve his academic and personal goals. Hipolito recently graduated in spring 2017 with a BBA in accounting.
In addition, Kimo Haynes, representing Saltchuk Resources’ Hawai‘i-based companies, presented a check to fulfill the company’s pledge of $150,000 to fund scholarships for graduate students from the neighbor islands enrolled in the College’s Distance EMBA Program. Haynes is the president of Maui Petroleum, Inc., a subsidiary of Saltchuk Resources, Inc.
The Maui Alumni & Friends Event was held on June 2 and raised over $11,000 for the Maui Alumni Business Scholarship.
