Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get an Honor Cord or Honor Stole?
    • If you are a BGS member, you may order cords and/or stoles from BGS's Store (Go to the national BGS website and click on "BGS Store" at the top of the page) to wear at the graduation/commencement ceremony. As of June 2023, honor cords were $14.99, stoles were $24.99.
    • * Purchasing and/or wearing honors regalia at commencement is optional.
    • * When ordering, in the chapter name field, type in "University of Hawaii at Manoa."
    • * We recommend ordering as far in advance as possible if you plan to wear it at Commencement (Their fastest shipping method is $60 for delivery within 1 week, but cheaper options may take up to 3-6 weeks. They say they aim to ship an order 2-3 business days after receiving the order.).
  • What if I cannot attend the initiation ceremony?
    • We encourage all new members to attend the initiation ceremony. Faculty, administrator, and staff members help to welcome and honor the year's new inductees. There is only one ceremony a year.
    • *However, attendance is optional. The only 3 things needed for membership are (1) your nomination based on academic achievement, (2) completing your membership profile with BGS, and (3) paying your one-time, lifetime dues.
    • *Even though attendance at the ceremony is optional, should you RSVP that you will attend, please plan to follow through. Food is ordered based on RSVP, names are included in the program, and the faculty are told who is attending, so some who know you may be looking forward to your attendance.
    • Certificate and pin: If you attend the ceremony: Members who have paid their dues and RSVP by the deadline will receive their certificate and pin at the ceremony. If you will not attend the ceremony: If you pay your dues by the deadline but are unable to attend the ceremony, we will send out details for picking up your certificate. Please note, though, that you or a designee will have to pick up the certificate in person from the designated room in the BusAd complex; BGS at UHM will not mail certificates/pins. If it is not possible for you or a designee to pick up your certificate and pin, there is a way to print a copy of your certificate from your BGS member account, but it will not have the Chapter advisor/deans' signatures.
  • What are the benefits of membership?
    • Membership in BGS indicates to potential employers your outstanding academic achievement and your commitment to business excellence. BGS lifelong membership also comes with education opportunities (test, test prep discounts, fee waivers, etc.) and professional benefits (professional continuing ed discounts, tech discounts, travel discounts).
    • BGS members are also honored by being mentioned in a separate section of the commencement booklet printed for each graduating class. Members will be sent a form to fill out if they wish to be included in the graduation booklet in the semester of their graduation.
