Hamid Pourjalali

Program Director

Hamid is the Donald A. Corbin Distinguished Professor in Accounting and the director of Shidler College’s School of Accountancy. He has been with the college for 27 years. Throughout this time, he has served in numerous leadership roles and on several committees; published more than 35 manuscripts on accounting topics; chaired research panel presentations, reviewed several research papers; and has served as a speaker at several national and international conferences. He created the popular Hawaii Accounting Research Conference (HARC), the Hawaii Accounting Research Doctoral Institute (HARDI) and most recently, the HIPSS program to provide students with a unique opportunity while at Shidler. Hamid is also a member of the American Accounting Association and the Hawaii Association of CPAs.

Nicholas Chagnon

Sociology Lecturer

Nick Chagnon is a senior lecturer in the Sociology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Departments. He has been at UH Manoa for over 10 years, teaching courses such as introductory sociology, drugs and society, deviance, and research methods, among many others. His research focuses on the intersection of justice, politics and media.

Thane Messinger

Business Law Instructor

Thane practiced corporate and real estate law with Kiefer, Oshima, Chun, Fong & Chung in Honolulu, later accepting a position as Court Counsel to the Kosrae Supreme Court. In addition to personal investments in real estate, as both seller and buyer, Thane has been involved in private equity, including numerous real estate deals. He is published widely in legal education – he has written four books and contributed to a dozen other books, including a text on negotiation. Messinger’s most recent work is Business Law: Navigating the Turbulent Realm of Commerce, his business law text.

Kristine Santaniello

Accounting and Applied Math in Business Instructor

Originally from the Silicon Valley, Kristine is an active CPA with about 13 years of accounting experience, mainly specializing in audit, corporate accounting and finance, and corporate governance for semiconductor, solar power, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies. However, her true passion lies in mentoring. She has worked with non-profit organizations to mentor underprivileged youth and youth that are in the foster care system. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys baking and the outdoors: be it snorkeling, scuba diving, snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, or backpacking.

Thomas Scheiding

Associate Professor of Economics

Tom Scheiding is an Associate Professor of Economics who has been teaching since 2005. In his classes, he immerses students into how the wealth and resources of a country are distributed and how economic equilibrium takes place.. Tom discusses how economics influences other fields of study and how the world looks through an ‘economic lens.’ He hopes that students can learn to appreciate how important economics is to understanding the world through discussion of stocks, bonds, and economic events. Jay Stout

Jay Stout

Communicology/Speech Lecturer

Jay Stout is a lecturer in Communicology at UH Manoa and Speech at Honolulu Community College. He primarily teaches introduction to human communication, introduction to public speaking, argumentation, and debate, and leadership and organizational communication. Jay has become experienced in a wide array of student groups, including early college and apprenticeship programs. His research interests are primarily in profanity and the censorship of profanity.
