Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does HIPSS differ from ACE and DAP?
ACE, DAP, and HIPSS offer students easy registration to courses that fulfill their graduation requirements.
ACE: With ACE, 20 students are reserved a seat within a larger lecture, but there is no dedicated class for that group of students. Moreover, your classes are in different locations (you will have to walk to various areas of campus for different classes).
DAP: The direct admit program is a cohort of 100 people, where you are required to take BUS 200 (Fall) and BLAW 200 (Spring) in your first year with only DAP students in each class. Aside from these classes, you must register for the additional 12 credits on your own. It also gives you a head start on business classes (BUS 310-315) – traditional students would not take these classes until their junior year after gaining acceptance to Shidler.
HIPSS: With HIPSS, there is more of a cohort feel, where only HIPSS students are in each class. The professors slightly modify the curriculum to integrate humanities and social sciences. HIPSS registers you for 4 classes (12 credits) every semester. In addition, all your classes are in the same room, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, giving you a consistent schedule and more flexibility to work or intern.
Q: Can I be part of the DAP and HIPSS cohorts at the same time?
Yes! The only class that overlaps is BLAW 200. You would take BLAW 200 with the HIPSS cohort in the fall and would not have to retake it with the DAP cohort. The DAP required BUS 200 course in the fall can be the fifth class you take, as the HIPSS curriculum is only 12 credits.
Q: There is a class that I need to take that conflicts with HIPSS. Can I still join HIPSS?
Yes! If there is a class that slightly overlaps with the HIPSS timing, you will have both instructors fill out a time conflict form. Missed class time would need to be made up (contact advisors for more detail).
Q: I already received college credit (e.g. AP/IB) for a course in the HIPSS curriculum. Would I need to retake this course?
Please contact the program director. Decisions will be made on a case by case basis.
